Safety Procedures for Drill Rods and Drill Bits

21-02-2026

With rising industrial demand for mining machinery, accessories such as drill rods (including triangular‑section rods and slotted rods) and diamond bits are seeing wider use. Safe operation of drill rods and drill bits requires strict adherence to standardized procedures.

Drill Rods

Pre‑use inspection

  • Measure the drill bit diameter precisely and verify that connection threads meet API specifications and show no damage.

  • Confirm gears and sealing components are intact, that gear engagement is normal without abnormal binding, and that welds are free of cracks and porosity.

  • Ensure bearings are properly installed and free of looseness. Nozzles must be installed correctly and securely.

  • Record inspection results and bit serial numbers clearly. Any bit found to have quality defects must not be put into service.

Installation

  • Keep the nozzle and bit body clean when installing nozzles. Ensure nozzle surfaces are smooth and undamaged and that seal rings are intact.

  • Do not strike nozzles, seal rings, or other components with hammers or hard tools to avoid damage. Make sure nozzles are firmly fixed to prevent loss during operation.

  • Use appropriate loading equipment when mounting bits. If storing or transporting bits in a bit box, pack the box with ropes, rags, or padding to prevent the cutters or teeth from being struck or damaged.

Drilling operations — special attention to PDC bits

  • PDC bits are particularly sensitive to operational errors. Calibrate gauges and automated recorders before drilling to ensure device parameters are accurate.

  • Maintain smooth, controlled operation and manage the rate of descent or penetration appropriately. Exercise extra caution when drilling in hard formations, through irregular hole diameters, or on deviated sections.

  • Avoid impacts between the bit and the borehole wall that can fracture cutters or damage bit tips, which can lead to premature failure of sealing components and other parts.

Strict inspection, correct installation, and careful drilling practices are essential to maximize tool life and ensure safe drilling operations.
