How Are Rock Drill Shanks Manufactured?
A rock drill shank connects the drill rod to the rock drill and transfers both impact energy and rotational torque. Its manufacturing quality directly affects drilling efficiency, reliability, and service life.
1. Incoming Steel Inspection
Each batch of steel is checked for chemical composition, metallographic structure, and dimensions. These inspections ensure that the raw material meets design requirements and prevent nonconforming steel from entering production.
2. Rough Machining
The rough-processing stage includes cutting, forging, annealing, rough machining, and pre-finish heat treatment. Forging densifies the metal structure and forms the initial geometry, while annealing relieves forging stress and improves machinability.
3. Precision Machining
Precision machining establishes the shank’s final geometry. Center holes, outer diameters, splines, and side water holes are processed with strict dimensional tolerances.
4. Heat Treatment
Overall carburizing creates a high-carbon surface layer. Air-cooling quenching and tempering then provide high surface hardness and wear resistance while preserving core toughness and fatigue strength.
5. Shot Blasting and Straightening
Straightening corrects heat-treatment distortion, while shot blasting removes surface oxide scale and improves surface cleanliness.
6. Surface Finishing
The outer diameter and side water holes undergo precision grinding and finishing to restore dimensional accuracy and surface quality at critical mating areas.
7. Corrosion Protection
Standard corrosion protection is applied for normal operating conditions. Shanks used in severely corrosive environments may require chrome plating or protective coatings.
8. Marking and Packaging
A unique identification mark gives every shank full lifecycle traceability. After final inspection, qualified products are packaged for delivery.
