Core Components and Operation
The system typically includes a rotating drill bit magazine, a mechanical gripping mechanism, a hydraulic tightening and alignment unit, and an intelligent monitoring and control system.
The rotating magazine stores both new and used drill bits and can include spare positions for continuous drilling. Gripping mechanisms may use pneumatic expanding chucks or mechanical external grippers to accommodate different bit designs.
The hydraulic unit tightens, removes, and aligns the drill rod and drill bit. The intelligent control system evaluates bit wear using drilling torque, feed speed, and equipment vibration data, then automatically initiates a bit-change command.

Sandvik automatic bit-changing systems commonly carry six to nine drill bits, support hole diameters from 45 to 115 mm, and complete a change in approximately 30 to 60 seconds.
